I wasn’t always the best version of myself. I mean, I’m still on that journey until the next life. But Assata Shakur did teach me that it is my duty to fight for my freedom and it is my duty to win. So I had to open my eyes to my own internalized oppression and release myself. That is my duty. I also had to face, head-on, the chains of my people, the violence enacted by a system that is dependent upon our oppression and I fight alongside them so that we can all be free. That is my duty.
That is the lens through which I share my heart and my art.
I take my experiences, my stories, the stories of my people, and I share our complexities, our nuance, our joy, and our power. That is one of the many ways I fight and it is my intention to win, because power belongs to ALL the people.
